2024-02-13 r/7508 feat(tvix/eval): Box Value::CatchableAspen Smith1-1/+1
This is now the only enum variant for Value that is larger than 8 bytes (it's 16 bytes), so boxing it (especially since it's not perf-critical) allows us to get the Value size down to only 16 bytes! Correctly propagate the case where the *key* of an attrset is a Value::Catchable (eg { "${builtins.throw "c"}" = "b"; }) in `NixAttrs::construct`, by converting the return type to `Result<Result<Self, CatchableErrorKind>, ErrorKind>` (ugh!!) and correctly handling that everywhere (including an `expect` in the Deserialize impl for NixAttrs, since afaict this is impossible to hit when deserializing from stuff like JSON). 2024-02-02 r/7467 refactor(tvix/eval): Box Value::StringAspen Smith1-3/+7
NixString is *quite* large - like 80 bytes - because of the extra capacity value for BString and because of the context. We want to keep Value small since we're passing it around a lot, so let's box the NixString inside Value::String to save on some memory, and make cloning ostensibly a little cheaper Change-Id: I343c8b4e7f61dc3dcbbaba4382efb3b3e5bbabb2 Reviewed-on: https://cl.tvl.fyi/c/depot/+/10729 Tested-by: BuildkiteCI Reviewed-by: sterni <sternenseemann@systemli.org>
2024-01-31 r/7460 fix(tvix): Represent strings as byte arraysAspen Smith1-14/+27
C++ nix uses C-style zero-terminated char pointers to represent strings internally - however, up to this point, tvix has used Rust `String` and `str` for string values. Since those are required to be valid utf-8, we haven't been able to properly represent all the string values that Nix supports. To fix that, this change converts the internal representation of the NixString struct from `Box<str>` to `BString`, from the `bstr` crate - this is a wrapper around a `Vec<u8>` with extra functions for treating that byte vector as a "morally string-like" value, which is basically exactly what we need. Since this changes a pretty fundamental assumption about a pretty core type, there are a *lot* of changes in a lot of places to make this work, but I've tried to keep the general philosophy and intent of most of the code in most places intact. Most notably, there's nothing that's been done to make the derivation stuff in //tvix/glue work with non-utf8 strings everywhere, instead opting to just convert to String/str when passing things into that - there *might* be something to be done there, but I don't know what the rules should be and I don't want to figure them out in this change. To deal with OS-native paths in a way that also works in WASM for tvixbolt, this also adds a dependency on the "os_str_bytes" crate. 2023-12-12 r/7176 feat(tvix/eval): nonrecursive coerce_to_string()Adam Joseph1-26/+0
After this commit, the only non-builtins uses of generators are: - coerce_to_string() uses generators::request_enter_lambda() - Thunk::force() uses generators::request_enter_lambda() That's it! Once those two are taken care of, GenCo can become an implementation detail of `builtins::BuiltinGen`. No more crazy nonlocal flow control within the interpreter: if you've got a GenCo floating around in your code it's because you're writing a builtin, which isn't part of the core interpreter. The interpreter won't need GenCos to talk to itself anymore. Technically generators::request_path_import() is also used by coerce_to_string(), but that's just because the io_handle happens to be part of the VM. There's no recursion-depth issue there, so the call doesn't need to go through the generator mechanism (request_path_import() doesn't call back to the interpreter!) 2023-03-13 r/5979 fix(tvix/eval): implement cppnix JSON-serialisation semanticsVincent Ambo1-20/+1
This drops the usage of serde::Serialize, as the trait can not be used to implement the correct semantics (function colouring!). Instead, a manual JSON serialisation function is written which correctly handles toString, outPath and other similar weirdnesses. Unexpectedly, the eval-okay-tojson test from the C++ Nix test suite now passes, too. This fixes an issue where serialising data structures containing derivations to JSON would fail. NixString values themselves are immutable anyways (which was a guarantee we already had with `SmolStr`), so this doesn't change anything else. 2023-03-13 r/5964 refactor(tvix/eval): flatten call stack of VM using generatorsVincent Ambo1-67/+0
Warning: This is probably the biggest refactor in tvix-eval history, so far. This replaces all instances of trampolines and recursion during evaluation of the VM loop with generators. A generator is an asynchronous function that can be suspended to yield a message (in our case, vm::generators::GeneratorRequest) and receive a response (vm::generators::GeneratorResponsee). The `genawaiter` crate provides an interpreter for generators that can drive their execution and lets us move control flow between the VM and suspended generators. To do this, massive changes have occured basically everywhere in the code. On a high-level: 1. The VM is now organised around a frame stack. A frame is either a call frame (execution of Tvix bytecode) or a generator frame (a running or suspended generator). The VM has an outer loop that pops a frame off the frame stack, and then enters an inner loop either driving the execution of the bytecode or the execution of a generator. Both types of frames have several branches that can result in the frame re-enqueuing itself, and enqueuing some other work (in the form of a different frame) on top of itself. The VM will eventually resume the frame when everything "above" it has been suspended. In this way, the VM's new frame stack takes over much of the work that was previously achieved by recursion. 2. All methods previously taking a VM have been refactored into async functions that instead emit/receive generator messages for communication with the VM. Notably, this includes *all* builtins. This has had some other effects: - Some test have been removed or commented out, either because they tested code that was mostly already dead (nix_eq) or because they now require generator scaffolding which we do not have in place for tests (yet). - Because generator functions are technically async (though no async IO is involved), we lose the ability to use much of the Rust standard library e.g. in builtins. This has led to many algorithms being unrolled into iterative versions instead of iterator combinations, and things like sorting had to be implemented from scratch. - Many call sites that previously saw a `Result<..., ErrorKind>` bubble up now only see the result value, as the error handling is encapsulated within the generator loop. This reduces number of places inside of builtin implementations where error context can be attached to calls that can fail. Currently what we gain in this tradeoff is significantly more detailed span information (which we still need to bubble up, this commit does not change the error display). We'll need to do some analysis later of how useful the errors turn out to be and potentially introduce some methods for attaching context to a generator frame again. This change is very difficult to do in stages, as it is very much an "all or nothing" change that affects huge parts of the codebase. I've tried to isolate changes that can be isolated into the parent CLs of this one, but this change is still quite difficult to wrap one's mind and I'm available to discuss it and explain things to any reviewer. Fixes: b/238, b/237, b/251 and potentially others. Instead of going through Vec/BTreeMap for generating our internal types, use the proptest strategies from imbl. The one thing I couldn't figure out in the previous implementation is where the ranges/sizes of generated collections came from. The strategies in proptest use different types (Range, with an unknown default value, and SizeRange with 0..100). I've opted to specify 0..100 directly, but we can probably make it configurable. Using `serde_json` for parsing JSON here, plus an `impl FromJSON for Value`. The latter is primarily to stay "dependency light" for now - likely going with an actual serde `Deserialize` impl in the future is going to be way better as it allows saving significantly on intermediary allocations. 2022-09-18 r/4908 refactor(tvix/eval): Don't (ab)use PartialEq for Nix equalityGriffin Smith1-54/+68
Using rust's PartialEq trait to implement Nix equality semantics is reasonably fraught with peril, both because the actual laws are different than what nix expects, and (more importantly) because certain things actually require extra context to compare for equality (for example, thunks need to be forced). This converts the manual PartialEq impl for Value (and all its descendants) to a *derived* PartialEq impl (which requires a lot of extra PartialEq derives on miscellanious other types within the codebase), and converts the previous nix-semantics equality comparison into a new `nix_eq` method. This returns an EvalResult, even though it can't currently return an error, to allow it to fail when eg forcing thunks (which it will do soon). Since the PartialEq impls for Value and NixAttrs are now quite boring, this converts the generated proptests for those into handwritten ones that cover `nix_eq` instead Change-Id: If3da7171f88c22eda5b7a60030d8b00c3b76f672 Reviewed-on: https://cl.tvl.fyi/c/depot/+/6650 Autosubmit: grfn <grfn@gws.fyi> Tested-by: BuildkiteCI Reviewed-by: tazjin <tazjin@tvl.su>
2022-09-18 r/4902 test(tvix/eval): impl Arbitrary for ValueGriffin Smith1-0/+29
Impl Arbitrary for Value (and NixAttrs and NixList) in the same way we did for NixString. Value currently only generates non-"internal" values (no thunks, AttrNotFound, etc.) and can't generate functions (builtins or closures), because those'd require full generation of tvix bytecode, which is a bit more work than I'd like to do now - there's a `todo!` left in the code for a place where we could allow opting-in to internal values and functions later. 2022-09-13 r/4836 feat(tvix/eval): implement initial fancy formatting for errorsVincent Ambo1-5/+1
This very closely follows the way it's done for warnings, but errors have a lot more information available in some cases which we do not surface yet. Note also that due to requiring the `CodeMap`, this is not yet called from eval.rs as the way that is threaded through needs to be refactored, so only the method for reporting these errors as strings is implemented so far. Next steps for this will be to add a generic diagnostics module that reduces some of the boilerplate for this between warnings & errors, and which will also give us a good point in the future to switch to a fancier diagnostics crate. 2022-09-08 r/4741 feat(tvix/eval): ensure all errors always carry a spanVincent Ambo1-8/+6
Previously error spans were optional because the information about code spans was not available at runtime. Now that this information has been added, the error type will always carry a span. This change is very invasive all throughout the codebase. This is due to the fact that many functions that are called *by* the VM expected to return `EvalResult`, but this no longer works as the span information is not available to those functions - only to the VM itself. To work around this the majority of these functions have been changed to return `Result<T, ErrorKind>` instead and an accompanying macro in the VM constructs the "real" error. Note that this implementatino currently has a bug where errors occuring within thunks will yield the location at which the thunk was forced, not the location at which the error occured within the code. This will be fixed soon, but the commit is large enough as is. 2022-09-03 r/4616 refactor(tvix/eval): avoid cloning in NixAttrs::update if possibleVincent Ambo1-20/+27
Refactors the update function to take the attribute sets by value instead. To facilitate this, we use an equivalent of the currently unstable `Rc::clone_or_unwrap` in the VM when encountering attribute sets, so that in cases where the only references to the attrs being updated are the ones on the stack those clones are avoided completely. This does make update() a little bit more tricky internally, as some optimised branches can directly return the moved value, and others need to destructure with ownership. For this reason there are now two different match statements handling the different ownership cases.
