2024-07-07 r/8355 fix(tvix/repl): Share globals and sourcemap across evaluationsAspen Smith7-21/+102
Now that we can bind (potentially lazy, potentially lambda-containing) values in the REPL and then reference them in subsequent evaluations, it's important that the values to which we construct shared references are shared across those subsequent evaluations - otherwise, we get panics due to unknown source map locations, or dropped weak references to globals. This change assigns both the globals and the source map as fields on the Repl after the first evaluation, and then passes those in (to the EvaluationBuilder) on subsequent evaluations. On the EvaluationBuilder side, there's some panicking introduced - this is intentional, as my intent is for the builder to be configured statically enough that panicking is the best way to report errors here (it's always a bug to misconfigure an Evaluation, and we'd never want to handle it dynamically). 2024-07-07 r/8353 test(tvix/cli): Make the REPL testableAspen Smith7-346/+469
Juggle around the internals of the tvix-cli crate so that we expose the Repl as a public type with a `send` method, that sends a string to the repl and *captures all output* so that it can be subsequently asserted on in tests. Then, demonstrate that this works with a single (for now) REPL test using expect-test to assert on the output of a single command sent to the REPL. As the REPL gets more complicated, this will allow us to make tests that cover that complex behavior. 2024-07-06 r/8351 refactor(tvix/eval): Builderize EvaluationAspen Smith1-21/+22
Make constructing of a new Evaluation use the builder pattern rather than setting public mutable fields. This is currently a pure refactor (no functionality has changed) but has a few advantages: - We've encapsulated the internals of the fields in Evaluation, meaning we can change them without too much breakage of clients - We have type safety that prevents us from ever changing the fields of an Evaluation after it's built (which matters more in a world where we reuse Evaluations). More importantly, this paves the road for doing different things with the construction of an Evaluation - notably, sharing certain things like the GlobalsMap across subsequent evaluations in eg the REPL. 2024-07-05 r/8346 feat(tvix/repl): Allow binding variables at the top-levelAspen Smith4-16/+147
Allow binding variables at the REPL's toplevel in the same way the Nix REPL does, using the syntax <ident> = <expr>. This fully, strictly evaluates the value and sets it in the repl's "env", which gets passed in at the toplevel when evaluating expressions. The laziness behavior differs from Nix's, but I think this is good: ❯ nix repl Welcome to Nix version 2.3.18. 2024-06-14 r/8271 feat(tvix/tracing): correctly close otlp on exitSimon Hauser1-1/+4
Provide a new interface for forcing a flush of otlp traces and use this interface to shutdown otlp prior to exiting tvix-store, either if the tool was stopped with a SIGTERM or ended regularly. This also fixes an issue where traces were not even exported if for example we just imported 10 paths and never even emitted more than 256 traces. The implementation uses a mpsc channel so a flush can be done without having to wait for it to complete. If you want to wait for a flush to complete you can provide a oneshot channel which will receive a message once flushing is complete. Because of a otlp bug `force_flush` as well as `shutdown_tracer_provider` need to be executed using `spawn_blocking` otherwise the function will deadlock. 2024-05-11 r/8103 refactor(tvix/store): drop calculate_nar from PathInfoServiceFlorian Klink1-15/+17
This shouldn't be part of the PathInfoService trait. Pretty much none of the PathInfoServices do implement it, and requiring them to implement it means they also cannot make use of this calculation already being done by other PathInfoServices. Move it out into its own NarCalculationService trait, defined somewhere at tvix_store::nar, and have everyone who wants to trigger nar calculation use nar_calculation_service directly, which now is an additional field in TvixStoreIO for example. It being moved outside the PathInfoService trait doesn't prohibit specific implementations to implement it (like the GRPC client for the `PathInfoService` does. This is currently wired together in a bit of a hacky fashion - as of now, everything uses the naive implementation that traverses blob and directoryservice, rather than composing it properly. I want to leave that up to a later CL, dealing with other parts of store composition too. 2024-04-22 r/7989 refactor(tvix/cli/default.nix): make eval tests and benches derivationsFlorian Klink1-49/+45
This makes the eval tests and benchmarks standalone Nix derivations and readTree targets: ``` nix-build -A tvix.cli.eval-nixpkgs-cross-hello-outpath nix-build -A tvix.cli.benchmark-nixpkgs-attrnames ``` Even without doing any fetches, We need to set `SSL_CERT_FILE`, so reqwest is able to load its CA roots. 2024-03-20 r/7752 fix(tvix): allow trace level log messages in debug buildsFlorian Klink1-1/+1
We had max_level_debug, not max_level_trace, so it was not possible to have `RUST_LOG` emit trace-level values (at least for our crates). release_max_level_info still controls the level for release builds, so that's not affected. 2024-02-21 r/7588 revert(tvix): don't use Rc::clone explicitlyaspen1-2/+2
This reverts commit d9565a4d0af3bffd735a77aa6f1fd0ec0e03b14a. Reason for revert: this was intentional - putting Rc::clone instead of .clone is a common Rust idiom, and makes it explicit that we're cloning a shared reference, not an underlying resource Change-Id: I41a5f323ee35d7025dc7bb02f7d5d05d0051798d Reviewed-on: https://cl.tvl.fyi/c/depot/+/10995 Tested-by: BuildkiteCI Reviewed-by: flokli <flokli@flokli.de>
2024-02-20 r/7578 feat(tvix/eval): implement `builtins.filterSource`Ryan Lahfa1-1/+3
We add a new set of builtins called `import_builtins`, which will contain import-related builtins, such as `builtins.path` and `builtins.filterSource`. Both can import paths into the store, with various knobs to alter the result, e.g. filtering, renaming, expected hashes. We introduce `filtered_ingest` which will drive the filtered ingestion via the Nix function via the generator machinery, and then we register the root node to the path info service inside the store. `builtins.filterSource` is very simple, `builtins.path` is a more complicated model requiring the same logic albeit more sophisticated with name customization, file ingestion method and expected SHA-256. 2024-02-20 r/7572 refactor(tvix/eval): use internal SourceCode field in error printersVincent Ambo1-2/+2
Makes use of the SourceCode field now being stored directly in errors (see parent CL). With this change, the default `Display` implementation can now format errors correctly, and there is no need to keep a `SourceCode` around just for error formatting. Updates dependent crates (CLI, serde, tvixbolt) to use this correctly. 2024-01-31 r/7460 fix(tvix): Represent strings as byte arraysAspen Smith1-1/+1
C++ nix uses C-style zero-terminated char pointers to represent strings internally - however, up to this point, tvix has used Rust `String` and `str` for string values. Since those are required to be valid utf-8, we haven't been able to properly represent all the string values that Nix supports. To fix that, this change converts the internal representation of the NixString struct from `Box<str>` to `BString`, from the `bstr` crate - this is a wrapper around a `Vec<u8>` with extra functions for treating that byte vector as a "morally string-like" value, which is basically exactly what we need. Since this changes a pretty fundamental assumption about a pretty core type, there are a *lot* of changes in a lot of places to make this work, but I've tried to keep the general philosophy and intent of most of the code in most places intact. Most notably, there's nothing that's been done to make the derivation stuff in //tvix/glue work with non-utf8 strings everywhere, instead opting to just convert to String/str when passing things into that - there *might* be something to be done there, but I don't know what the rules should be and I don't want to figure them out in this change. To deal with OS-native paths in a way that also works in WASM for tvixbolt, this also adds a dependency on the "os_str_bytes" crate.
