2020-11-21 r/1894 chore(3p): Bump nixpkgs to nixos-unstable from 2020-11-21Vincent Ambo1-7/+4
Included fixes for random breakage: * 3p/awscli: pick from the stable channel; it is broken on unstable * 3p/googletest: bumped version & removed patches that nixpkgs applies * 3p/lisp/cffi: bumped library version for SBCL compat * 3p/nix: fix libsystemd attribute * 3p/nix: reformatted (clang-format handling of ternaries changed) * glittershark/home: Use home-manager from nixkpgs * glittershark/kernel: bumped linux-ck patch hash * glittershark/kernel: removed "patch patch" * multi/whitby: Use home-manager from nixpkgs * tazjin/frog: drop Sourcetrail (it doesn't build currently) Note that in addition to these changes, some previous CLs updated the versions of git and cgit which was necessary for this channel bump, but which could not be done in the same commit due to the nature of the subtree merges. 2020-08-21 r/1698 refactor(tvix): Replace several DiscardLogsSink() with std::cerrVincent Ambo1-3/+1
Introduces the actual log sink in several places where we actually want the build logs to thread through correctly. This should cover *most* build paths. 2020-08-20 r/1689 chore(tvix): Thread a std::ostream through Store::buildPathsVincent Ambo1-1/+3
This part of the store API needs to carry a handle to the log sink from now on, so that it can be passed in as appropriate from the gRPC handlers. In all places where there is no such handler available at the moment, the discarding log sink has been inserted. This can be used as a convenient grep target in the future. 2020-08-17 r/1658 refactor(tvix): always pass Bindings by ptr, use shared/unique_ptrKane York1-7/+8
Value now carries a shared_ptr<Bindings>, and all Bindings constructors return a unique_ptr<Bindings>. The test that wanted to compare two Bindings by putting them into Values has been modified to use the new Equal() method on Bindings (extracted from EvalState). 2020-08-14 r/1649 refactor(tvix): Make Store::buildPaths return a StatusGriffin Smith1-2/+3
Make Store::buildPaths return a Status with [[nodiscard]] rather than throwing exceptions to signal failure. This is the beginning of a long road to refactor the entire store API to be status/statusor based instead of using exceptions. 2020-08-14 r/1646 refactor(tvix): completely remove boehm gcKane York1-1/+1
We have decided that leaking memory is a better fate than random, non-debuggable memory corruption. Future CLs will begin changing various fields to std::unique_ptr and std::shared_ptr. It turns out that disabling the GC does not have disasterous impact. The Nix evaluator only runs on the client CLI, never in any long- running process. Even the REPL does not leak too badly under this change, because it uses one EvalState for the duration of the REPL. Building an explicitly tracing garbage collector is likely in the future of this project, but that giant amount of work cannot be done under a nix evaluator that is constantly crashing. We need to restore development velocity here, and this is the best way we've figured out to do it. 2020-07-20 r/1408 chore(3p/nix): Remove support for pluginsGriffin Smith1-2/+0
Plugins seem to not really be used anywhere (I can find one plugin that's actually defined, and it doesn't seem very useful, especially since we got rid of builtins.exec) and their presence is adding additional complexity and potential sources of bugs to an already unsteady refactor. At some point we may want to bring back something *like* plugins, but their design will likely be different and it will definitely be after we have a functioning Nix again. 2020-07-18 r/1377 refactor(3p/nix/libexpr): Back Nix lists with std::vectorVincent Ambo1-4/+3
This change does away with the previous special-casing of lists of certain element sizes, and the use of raw C-style arrays. Lists are now backed by a std::vector of nix::Value*, which uses the traceable GC allocator. This change is unfortunately quite noisy because the accessor methods were updated/removed accordingly, so all callsites of Nix-related lists have changed. For some operations in primops.cc where keeping the previous code structure would have been more difficult with a "proper" vector, the implementation has been replaced with std::vector methods. For example, list concatenation now uses appropriate range inserts. Anecdotally the performance of this is about equal, to even slightly better, than the previous implementation. All language tests pass and the depot paths I've used for testing still evaluate. 2020-05-27 r/865 refactor(3p/nix): Anchor local includes at src/Vincent Ambo1-16/+16
Previously all includes were anchored in one global mess of header files. This moves the includes into filesystem "namespaces" (if you will) for each sub-package of Nix. Note: This commit does not introduce the relevant build system changes.
2020-05-25 r/845 refactor(3p/nix/libutil): Replace hasPrefix/Suffix with AbseilVincent Ambo1-2/+3
Uses the equivalent absl::StartsWith and absl::EndsWith functions instead.
2020-05-25 r/843 refactor(3p/nix/libutil): Replace string2Int & trim functionsVincent Ambo1-3/+4
Replaces these functions with corresponding functions from Abseil, namely absl::StripAsciiWhitespace and absl::SimpleAtoi. In the course of doing this some minor things I encountered along the way were also refactored. This also changes the signatures of the various custom readFile functions to use absl::string_view types.
2020-05-24 r/841 style(3p/nix): Remove 'using std::*' from xml-writer.hhVincent Ambo1-2/+2
See previous commit for more details on why.
2020-05-24 r/840 style(3p/nix): Remove 'using std::*' from types.hhVincent Ambo1-51/+57
It is considered bad form to use things from includes in headers, as these directives propagate to everywhere else and can make it confusing. types.hh (which is includes almost literally everywhere) had some of these directives, which this commit removes.
2020-05-22 r/803 chore(3p/nix/libexpr): Delete Bindings::sortVincent Ambo1-5/+0
This function does nothing anymore since the attributes are always in-order.
2020-05-22 r/802 fix(3p/nix): Update for usage of new attribute set APIVincent Ambo1-3/+2
The new attribute set API uses the iterators of the btree_map directly. This requires changes in various files because the internals of libexpr are very entangled. This code runs and compiles, but there is a bug causing empty attribute sets to be assigned incorrectly.
2020-05-21 r/795 fix(3p/nix): Compatibility with updated SymbolTableVincent Ambo1-2/+2
The functions in SymbolTable have been renamed to match the Google Style guide, and some debug-only functions have been removed.

2020-05-20 r/787 refactor(3p/nix): Apply clang-tidy's modernize-* fixesVincent Ambo1-12/+11
This applies the modernization fixes listed here: https://clang.llvm.org/extra/clang-tidy/checks/list.html The 'modernize-use-trailing-return-type' fix was excluded due to my personal preference (more specifically, I think the 'auto' keyword is misleading in that position).
2020-05-19 r/777 style(3p/nix): Final act in the brace-wrapping sagaVincent Ambo1-120/+190
This last change set was generated by a full clang-tidy run (including compilation): clang-tidy -p ~/projects/nix-build/ \ -checks=-*,readability-braces-around-statements -fix src/*/*.cc Actually running clang-tidy requires some massaging to make it play nice with Nix + meson, I'll be adding a wrapper or something for that soon.
2020-05-19 r/772 style(3p/nix): Add braces around single-line for-loopsVincent Ambo1-3/+9

2020-05-19 r/767 style(3p/nix): Enforce braces around loops and conditionalsVincent Ambo1-7/+21
This change was generated with: fd -e cc -e hh | xargs -I{} clang-tidy {} -p ~/projects/nix-build/ \ --checks='-*,readability-braces-around-statements' --fix \ -fix-errors Some manual fixes were applied because some convoluted unbraced statements couldn't be untangled by clang-tidy. This commit still includes invalid files, but I decided to clean them up in a subsequent commit so that it becomes more obvious where clang-tidy failed. Maybe this will allow for a bug-report to clang-tidy.
